L’altare Maggiore in marmo di Carrara è dedicato a S. Sofia con il Martirio di S. Sofia e delle sue figlie Fede, Speranza e Carità (1793) è l’opera di maggior rilievo del pittore venezione Carlo Alvise Fabris (1746 - 1803). Il tema della grande pala restaurata nel 1992, rappresenta il martirio di S. Sofia, personificazione leggendaria della sapienza divina, raffigurata, secondo l’iconografia occidentale, come una matrona costretta ad assistere al martirio, ordinato dall’imperatore Adriano, delle figlie Fede, Speranza e Carità anch’esse rappresentazione delle virtù Teologali. L’affollata disposizione delle diverse figure drammaticamente animate da effetti chiaroscurali, rimanda alla tradizione figurativa tardo barocca. L’opera è contornata dalla decorazione in monocromo, con angeli, festoni e cherubini di Massimino Baseggio.
